| Sounds like your son is suffering from a little insecurity. The issue here is not lying, but, as you said, the desperate need to be liked. I think you should just leave the "truthful issue" aside for now and concentrate on helping your youngster become more of a fan of himself. You could try to reduce criticism and increase praise, positive feedback and naming his feelings. This is only a beginning.
