| When you want to get a child to go to sleep earlier, you must adjust his wake-up time. I am assuming that this toddler of yours is waking up after 8 a.m. - maybe even 9 a.m. or later. Whatever time it is, start waking him a half hour earlier than usual. Do this for 4 days. Then move him back another half hour and do that for 4 days. Keep moving the time back until you reach 6:30 or 7a.m. - or whatever is the earliest time that could work for you and your household. Ten stick to that new wake-up time daily from now on. Your youngster will soon be exhausted in the evening and ready to settle down at a reasonable hour. The first week or two however, will be very difficult for all of you. At first your youngster will be waking up earlier but falling asleep at his usual time - so he'll be a bit of a wreck for a number of days. His internal clock will get all messed up as you keep waking him earlier and earlier. Expect him to be cranky until his new rhythm sets in. However, even if this process takes a couple of weeks it will certainly be worth it. You'll have your child in a good sleep routine that will be much more to your liking. Sarah Chana
